BUTTER FACTORIES AND STAFF
Sir. —I am a first assistant employed in a large butter factory where 22 men aro working. Of these 22 men I find there are only three men who intend to try to become factory managers. Surely there must be something wrong with the conditions for this position to arise. At present tho award wages plus the 5 per cent are: For 48 hours per week, first assistant £5 19s 6d, second assistant £5 12s 10d, cream grader £5 12s lOd, third assistant £5 ss, and general hands £4 14s 6d. Compare these men and the responsible work they are doing with the lorrydriver who brings tho cream to the factory. He works a 44-hour week and gets £5 18s 6d, or one shilling less than a first assistant, who might have up to 30 men under him. Can you wonder at the men leaving tho factories for more attractive jobs? I have had 18 years' experience and know what I am talking about, and I would like some other worker to give his view. I have not written for any personal gain, but because I consider the position serious, and I would like to see the job made more attractive and induce a better class of men to follow up New Zealand's leading industry. Wake Ur, Directors.
