Collecting Metal
DEAR ANNE SHIRLEY,—LateIy the scouts of this district have been out collecting waste metal for the "War Effort." After cycling about five miles, 1 called in at one farmhouse where the son, an airman, was home on leave. It was raining when .1 knocked 011 the door and I was invited inside. I was made to feel so welcome. Then began a search for the metals 1 was collecting. The two old folk joked and befriended me, while the airman went out to find all the metal they had. When I left, .1 had a full bag, and I felt that I was welcome to come again. At nearly all the houses 1 received the same welcome, and soon I had to unload at a house and form a base from which to pick the metals up in a car In one of the homes I saw a large photo of Sergeant Ward, the V.C. winner. I collected three bags of metal and there are many more homes to visit yet. This shows the splendid spirit of'the people of New Zealand and the welcome that is given to all who are helping the war effort.—From your sincere member, David Havill (14), Runciman.
