Evening on the Farm

IN a little valley evening was creeping. In the distance the elippety-clop of horses' shoes on the loose metal road could be heard, together with the bleating of young lambs being hurried along bv tired, thirsty and hungry dogs. The rattle of milk pails could be heard quite plainly, accompanied by the cries of a cat running along beside a girl carrying the milk home. A shrill whistle rang out over the hills, the echo coming hack. That was time for the dogs' meal. Hig dogs and puppies running beside their mother answered this call, barking loudly as they came. Gradually peace and quietness fell over the little valley. —Original, by Jean Chalmers (14).
