PAY FOR HAY BALING

AWARD SUSPENSION URGED (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Tuesday The suspension of sections of the award governing men employed on hay baling presses is desired by the Whangarei sub-provincial executive of the Farmers' Union, which at a meeting to-day decided to telegraph to the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Labour to this effect. Mr. W. H. James, president of the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society, said that as the men employed were paid on a bale basis contractors with modern plants were penalised, and men working on these plants were earning up to £3 for an eight-hour day. This was making hay baling an expensive business for the farmer, and baling in the Whangarei district was costing as much as the hay was worth. The executive considered that the sections of the award should be suspended for the duration of the war.
