WOMEN'S UNIT
SERVICE OVEESEAS
SCALE OF PAY FIXED PRIVATES GET 6/- A DAY The pay for members of the Women's War Service Auxiliary on overseas service is set out in the newly issued 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force Pay and Allowances Emergency Regulations, 1941. Daily rates are as follows: —Officers, lis; sergeant, 8s 6d; corporal, 7s; private, 6s. This means that officers receive 5s 0d less than a male 2nd-lieutenant, and sergeants Is 6d, corporals 2s and privates Is (id less than their corresponding male ranks. From the time they enter a mobilisation camp until departure from the country, all members of the auxiliary have to allot not less than 2s a day to either a person wholly or partly dependent on her or to a post-office ings bank account in her name. From and including the date of departure, the allotment becomes as follows:—Officers, not less than 5s a day; sergeants, not less than 3s 6d; and other ranks, not less than 3s. If after departure they are required to live in a large town where rations and quarters are not provided they have to be paid an allowance of 10s a day, whether they are officers or other ranks. The same rate may be paid if they are granted sick leave overseas and are not accommodated in a convalescent hospital. On her appointment to the Expedi-» tionary Force for overseas service a member of the auxiliary shall receive an outfit grant of £4O. This compares with the £SO granted to members of the Army Nursing Service and officers of the Expeditionary Force, both of whom, however, are subject to deductions of any amount received as uniform grant while a member of a home defence unit. The auxiliary members overseas are also to receive an annual outfit-upkeep allowance of £lO, payable in equal quarterly instalments of £2 10s, the "first being made three months after embarkation. On being struck off the strength of the Expeditionary Force after service overseas, auxiliary members shall be entitled to a mufti allowance of £l2 10s and will not be obliged to return any articles of clothing. This contrasts with the regulations in respect of soldiers, whose mufti allowance is proportionately reduced according to the value of any article of uniform not returned.
