Overseas Ballot Names of single reservists in the Northern Military District called up for service overseas by ballot this week appear on page 10. The total number called up in all districts was 4684. Further Meningitis Case A further case of cerebro-spinal meningitis was admitted to the Auckland Hospital on Monday. The patient, a man aged about 30, was reported yesterday afternoon to be progressing satisfactorily. There are now 13 meningitis cases in the hospital, one acute and 12 in varying degrees of convalescence. Fruit Acid Substitutes Owing to the difficulty of obtaining adequate supplies of citric and tartaric acids, an amending regulation has been made under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, providing as a temporary measure that wherever the existing regulations permit either acid to be used in the preparation of any food, it may be replaced to the extent of not more than 50 per cent with an equivalent quantity of lactic or phosphoric acid. Supplies of Fruit A wide variety of fruit, including cooking plums, green cherry plums, cherries, loganberries, gooseberries and Australian oranges, were auctioned at the city markets yesterday. Odd lines of outdoor tomatoes also made an appearance and sold at from 6d to 9d per lb. Cooking and cherry plums changed hands at from 5s to 7s 3d a case. The market was heavily supplied with hothouse tomatoes and prices tended to ease. Values for extra choice Captain Cook strawberries ranged from 2s 3d to 2s 6d a chip. "Poaching" o! Labour The serious results of "poaching" of labour between firms, with a consequent fictitious value being placed on services, were mentioned at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association yesterday. A long discussion was taken in committee. It was decided- that the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation should be requested to discuss with the Employers' Association ways of suggesting to employers generally the need for avoiding this practice, which was having a detrimental effect on industries, particularly those engaged in war duties. "Orphaned" Missions A report that about £I9OO had been contributed throughout New Zealand for "orphaned" missions, that is, for Christian missions that have been cut off from their home bases through war conditions, was made to the missions committee of the Presbyterian Church yesterday. It was stated that of this amount £ISOO had been raised from Church of England sources. The Presbyterian Church had in hand £125 in addition to a sum raised by the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union; and the making of a further appeal to the Church for this cause was authorised. Use oi Training College A statement that all student teachers will not return to their temporary quarters in the University College in the New Year, but will attend the Training College on March 1 next was made yesterday by the chairman of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. W. J. Campbell. He said the board had wished to resume possession of the training college, at present an auxiliary hospital, as from the end of next January and had asked the, Auckland Hospital Board if this could be arranged, as present arrangements at the university were unsatisfactory for both university and education board. The hospital board's reply was that the • training college would be vacated by March 1, in terms of the original undertaking, and as a result the education board had decided to assemble present and new students on March 1 and make up the lost time, amounting to about a fortnight, during term holidays later in the year,.
