WEST END CLUB OPENS The official opening of the West End Rowing Club's season took place on Saturday afternoon with the Patron's Day At Home in the boathoii.se, St. Mary's Bay. There was a large attendance. The president. Mr. A. (J. Norden, apologised for the absence of Mr. A. M. Paterson, patron, who is ill in hospital. In welcoming the visitors Mr. .Norden stated that with TO members serving with Liie forces the club strength had been severely taxed. He appealed to all old members to join up as honorary members and assist the youths to keep the flng flying. Among the many old members present were: Messrs. A. M. Wilson. J. McKenzie, •T. H. Bigeiow, life-members, and H. E. Linder, who was club captain in 1005-00, the season that West End won the Marriner Champion Flag. Another keen supporter and donor of trophies was Mr. Hallyburton.Tohnstone. The fiixt heat of the trial fours for trophies donated by Mr. Patersnn resulted:—R. Alexander, .7. Howe, I>, Allely, G. Russell, L. Harris cox), I; K. Craies. J. Culam, L. Pitcher, R. WeatheraM, C. Beckham (cox), 2. Won by a canvas. The second heat resulted: M. Conway, J. Keen, K. Bigelow, li. Beckham, C Beckham (cox), 1; A. Coulam, 11. Dobbie, A. Coulam (sen.), N. Conway, L. Harris (cox), 2. Won by a foot. The crews of J. Alexander and M. Conway met in the final. A fast pace was set from the start, and there was little between the fours until near the wharf. Conway entered the last stretch with a slight lead. On the run to the line Alexander, with a longer swinging stroke, mowed the leaders down, to cross the line the winner by a canvas. Following is the result of tho veterans' fours: G. S. Skinner, A. J. Coulam, A. Hunter, L. li. McDonald, J: L. Culpan, A. IT. Beamish, J. C. Aitken, F. Canny (North End Club, Dunedin), '2. Won by half a canvas. Jubilee Club.—The Jubilee 'Rowing Club (Blind Institute) was officially opened on Saturday afternoon. Tho visitors were welcomed by Mr. D. McPhee, president, who expressed pleasure at the large attendance of friends. He thanked the ladies' committee for their support and congratulated the members upon the excellent state of the boats and plant. Mr. A. C. Norden, vice-coin modore, stated that tho club was now firmly established in Auckland rowing. With so many new young members the prospects were promising. Mr. Norden then declared the season opened. Owing to the rough state of the water tho cornmittco decided not to launch tho boats. HAMILLTON SEASON OPENED (0.C.) HAMILTON, Sunday The Hamilton Rowing Club's 3011-42 season was opened yesterday in showery weather, the president, Mr. A. M. Bisley, being tho principal speaker. Among those present were Messrs. C. 0. 1 lenlnian and S. 'IT. Buchanan, of the Auckland Rowing Association. A series of trial fours was held, the results being:—First heat: F. Williams (stroke). T. Dooley. E. Barrakat, J. Tanner • beat W7 Taylor (stroke). R. Mills, J. McKinley, R. Steele; A, G. McHugh (stroke), J. Bremncr, I?,. Morgan. IX Rent beat 11. Fitzgerald (stroke), J. Pollard, P. Williams, ~T. Watkins. Second heat: Williams beat J. Cusack (stroke), P. Lincoln, J. Copelaud, McGinty. "Final* -McHugh beat Williams.
