TWO COMMISSIONS
PROMOTION OVERSEAS Promotion to the rank of pilot-officer has been gained by Sergeant-Pilot Jack Ralph Gavegan, son of Mrs. and the late Lieutenant C. P. Gavegan, R.N., of Auckland. Educated at the Auckland Grammar School, Pilot-Officer Gavegan is aged 30. He enlisted in the Air Force in August, 1940, and left for England after a month's preliminary training at Ohakea as an air gunner. He is now with a fighter squadron. While at school, Pilot-Officer Gavegan was prominent as a runner and footballer, and was a member of the first fifteen. Prior to enlisting, he was employed for 12 years at Hobson Farm, near Helensville. Advice has been received that Lead-ing-Aircraftman Noel P. Whaley, son of Mrs. F. M. Whaley, of Heme Bay, has been promoted to the rank of pilotofficer. Educated at Ponsonby school and the Seddon Memorial Technical College, he won a Hindley Scholarship at the latter school. He later attended the Teachers' Training College, and prior to enlisting was on the staff of the Richmond Road school. After preliminary training at Levin and Whenuapai, Pilot-Officer Whaley left for Canada last August.
