SEVEN INJURED
PARTY FROM SHIPS CAR STRIKES POST CRASH IN DARKNESS (O.CJ GREYMODTH. Friday Failing to negotiate a corner between Gladstone and the new river bridge on the Greymouth-Hokitika highway a motor-car driven by Mr. James McGill, chief engineer on a ship, with six passengers, members of crews of vessels in port, crashed into a telegraph post. All occupants of the car were injured and two of them are-now in the Grey Hospital. The car, which was damaged extensively, is the property of Mr. J. Haines, and had been lent for the night to Mr. McGill. Extent ol Casualties The injured men in hospital are Mr. Horace Petty, chief officer, who suffered a fracture of the nose and head injuries, and Mr. Henri Courtois, chief officer, who has a dislocated hip. The others are Mr. McGill, slight head injuries and cut on right knee; Mr. James Gray, ship's steward; Mr. John Morton, second officer; Mr. N. E. Lobbe, wireless operator, and Captain Emile Savoie, ship's master, all of whom suffered head injuries. However, all were able to return to their respective ships after treatment at the hospital. A Dangerous Corner The scene of the accident is a dangerous corner and several mishaps have occurred there. The men were on their way to Hokitika to attend a social gathering when the accident occurred. The night was dark and rain was falling. After striking the post the car overturned. One of the men was brought into hospital in a car which came along shortly after the accident and an ambulance brought in the other more seriously injured passengers, .
