Two Hares
DEAR ANNE SHIRLEY,—The other day I was biking to work, when what should como hopping up the tarred road but a hare toward me. I cycled oh slowly and still it came on, but when it got close to me, it stopped, looked at me, and decided that I was not a person to be trusted, for it hopped into a near by field. When I got further down the road, I noticed another hare in the opposite field. This luire was sniffing around, stopping every now and then to make sure, just like a fox-terrier when it is on the trail of a rat. I cycled on a little bit and then stopped, watching it, and sure enough it followed the other one's trail out on to the road. Up the road the second hare hopped to where the first one had stopped and redoubled its tracks a wee way and then into the field. This puzzled the second one, for lie sniffed around, sat up, and sniffed around again. It was a good thing there were not many cars about or it would not havo stayed there long. The second one decided that its mate must have gone on along the road, for it went that way and disappeared over the hill. I then cycled on, and when I got further down the frogs were practising their choruses. I often wondered if those two hares found one another again, tor they were well apart when the other one disappeared over the hill.—Yours sincerely, Betty Frost. Turiwiri.
