DECLINE IN REVENUE

NORTHERN HARBOUR BOARDS UNFAIR COMPETITION ALLEGED (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Thursday A decision to request the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, to visit Northland, so that harbour hoards in the area might he given the opportunity of placing before him their difficulties regarding competition of the railways with coastal shipping, -was reached at a conference of harbour boards held at Kaikohe to-day. It was considered that no good purpose would be gained by further deputations to Wellington. The conference also requested that the finding of the Transport Co-ordina-tion Committee be published. This committee sat at various centres in Northland, as well as in Auckland and Wellington, and heard evidence regarding alleged unfair competition with coastal shipping by the Railway Department's truck system and the result of this competition on harbour boards. Although it is nearly two years ago since the committee sat. no finding has been published. The Northland harbour hoards have made repeated representations regarding the decline in revenue through the railway truck system.
