SOCIETY OF ARTS

SUMMER EXHIBITION GOOD WORK ON VIEW The summer exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts, which was opened by the president, Mr. R. 0. Gross, last night at a private view in the society's clubrooms, Victoria Arcade, presents & very creditable collection of about 115 works and shows that Auckland artists have not allowed the distractions of wartime to damp their enthusiasm. lu "Anaesthetic," an oil painting, A. 0. Hipwell has symbolised with a good deal of success the sensations of a patient at the stage when he begins to feel himself floating off the operating table. Being perfectly comprehensible, the picture can hardly be classed as surrealistic. A. Lois White and Anna Robinson show portraits of distinction in oils and A. B. Barns Graham contributes two fine conte heads, one being a charming study of a very young baby. A drawing of the nude by L. F. Fraser is a notable piece of work. Ivy M. Copeland shows a delicate watercolour of a Maori lad and a study in oils of two boys ploying with a boat on a lake shore. Among the oil landscapes are works bv J. 0. Duncan, Alice F; Whvte, Ida G. Eise, D. Yatlance Young, Winifred Bailie, Minnie F. White and F. W. Gross. Three small studies by A. Reid are full >of romantic feeling. Bessie Christie has achieved a fine decorative effect in "Pine Trees on Mount Hobson." The watercolour landscapes make a particularly good display, including work bv -Vernon Brown, Helen Brown, Peggy "and Ella Spicor, Lyrirte Hamilton. Gwyneth Richardson, Lilias Lane and Joan Robertson. ' Exhibitors in still-life are numerous and include John and Charles Tole, Bessie Christie, Gwyneth Richardson and Jean MoKav. There is a good black- , arid-white, section, in whicn some drawings by Lvnne Hamilton or old buildings are notable. Olive Jones shows hand-made pottery and a group,of adult students has contributed a couection of block-printed textiles. .. The exhibition will ha open to the public daily.
