SERVICE APPEALS
CLERGY AND STUDENTS
Exemption from military service on public interest grounds was sought for 39 clergymen, theological students and religious workers at a sitting of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday. Most of the hearings were of a formal nature, representatives of the churches and religious organisations concerned giving evidence of the reservists' hona fides in accordance with the regulations. In the case of a theological student who wished to enter the army, his calling up was postponed until he completed cominc examinations. The hoard reserved its decision in the case of another who wished to proceed to China to do mission work. In a third case the board adjourned the hearing for further evidence. Adjournments sine die were granted in all other cases.
