LOCAL AND GENERAL
Transfer of Territorials About 200 Territorials of the Ist Battalion, Auckland Regiment, are being transferred to the 3rd Battalion, Auckland Regiment. Residential qualifications will be taken into consideration when the transfer is effected. These men will therefore do their collective training in the period from March 14 to May 9, instead of from January 10 to March 7. Use of College Buildings Although the University College buildings have not been used for university purposes since November 14, when the degree examinations ended, the staff and students of the Training College are still in possession, and will remain until their year closes on December 12. For this reason the matriculation examinations, which begin on Monday, will not be held at the college, but in halls .elsewhere in the city. Traffic Prosecutions One of the heaviest lists of traffic prosecutions for some time was dealt with in two Courts yesterday, when over 80 motorists were charged with various offences against the by-laws. The majority of the cases were of a minor nature, one of the most common being incorrect parking. Failure to dip headlights when passing other cars cost a number of drivers small fines and a warning, while on other counts fines ranging to £3 with costs were imposed. Useless Tobacco Tins An Auck'lander's hopes that empty tobacco tins, a great number of which have accumulated in his office, might be used for war purposes, have been dashed by the discovery that apparently no one wants them. In a letter to the Herald he has asked for a solution to the problem. When the matter was referred to Dr. E. P. Neale, Auckland provincial reclamation of waste supervisor, it was stated that there was no plant in New Zealand to salvage the tin coating of the containers, which therefore had no value. A representative of a tobacco company said the empty tins could not be repacked and had no commercial use. Wedding Incident While he was being married yesterday in the Hastings registry office, which is in the same building in which a sitting of the No. 4A Armed Forces Appeal Board was being held, a reservist who had been appealed for by the Director of National Service heard his name called. Ho answered the call from the registry office across a passage. The wedding ceremony was just at an end when the case was called, but as the employer had not appeared the appeal was stood down, and the bridegroom had an hour's wait before it was called again. In the meantime, his bride waited outside. When the case was finally called, with the employer concerned still absent, the reservist informed the board he had not intended to appear himself, and his presence was entirely due to the chance calling by a constable of his name while he was still in the registry office. The Use of Force Whether any theological student for whom churches sought military exemption on public interest grounds would have conscientious objections to doing alternative service in the Home Guard if sine die adjournments were granted was a point raised at a sitting of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday. The chairman, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., sfvid the board needed this information in order to know what type of alternative service to order. Assuring the board that none of the three students for whom he was appearing had conscientious objections, the Rev. Frank de Lisle, Congregational minister, referred to one, Jim Bernard Chambers, as being "an exceptional student and at the same time light-weight boxing champion ol the University of New Zealand." "Well, he has no objection to using force," said the chairman, in adjourning the case sine die and ordering alternative Homo Guard service.
