SMART NOVICE PACEES FORM AT CLAUDELANOS SUCCESS OF DIVIDED RACES BY ABAYDOS Any doubt existing about divided races being unfavourable for speculative purposes was dispelled at the Waikato trotting meeting on Saturday, when the pool for the Eureka Handicap, which was run in two divisions, was 0110 of the largest for the day. Provision will again bo made to divide the .p rankton Handicap, limit 3.5, and To Kowhai ■Handicap, limit 3.-13. at the summer meeting on Saturday wook, the stako in each instance being increased from £135 to £250, the winner of each division to receive £IOO, second £ls and third £lO. The Waikato Club is to be commended on its enterprise in assisting to solve the problem of novice pacers and especially in making the winning stake the same value as would apply if no division was necessary. Of those in the class to raco last Saturday, Exporter, E.venow and Oxford, by their successes, have advanced to Uhe improvers' section, hut there is a wealth of promising material among the remainder, while a number of fresh candidates" will give added interest. Brilliant Globe Improves Among the fresh horses are Brilliant Globo, Gwen Grattan, Typical, Kia Ora King and Dunkirk. Brilliant Globe, a speedy Australianbred pacer, disappointed in his few racos previously, but at the recent matinee gave a glimpse of form suggestive of better things. Typical also revealed promise by boing twice placed. Gwen Grattan won a raco at the Waikato Show, creating a good impression. Kia Ora king has mado sufficient improvement to iiave early prospects of success. Dunkirk has not raced since coming to Auckland, but in live successive starts in the South Island recorded three seconds and a third. Gamester showed a nice turn of speed in the Ngaruawahia Handicap and he should derive benefit from the outing. Gamester is a well-bred four-year-old by Jack Potts from the good mare Muriel de Oro. For one with limited experience Pinocchio revealed n lot of improvement in leading the field at a merry pace most of the way in the second division of the Eureka Handicap, and, although tiring at the end, she battled on for third. Press Gang, a good track horse, ran his best race for some considerable time when he was clocked to go 2.46 1-5 to finish second to Eyenew in tho second division of the Eureka Handicap. On that showing Press Gang was expected to take a lot of boating in the Ngaruawahia Handicap, but a bad lapse in ttie running marred his chance. If he can reproduce tbe time credited to him last week, Press Gang should bo an early winner. Rama Direct ran up to her best for second to Oxford,. an effort that has gained her 12 yards penalty and may make her task more difficult in futnro. Guiding Light, a goodlooking daughter of Pe.ter Bingen and Guiding Star, attracted attention by the manner in which she ran into fourth place after losing a lot of ground early. Whenever Guiding Light goes away smartly she should be hard to beat. , , ■ Castella del Oro. who raced consistently last season, is likely to show improvement, on his effort. As usual, he began very quickly, but left his feet early to lose his position. Rougo Flambe, by Rey de Oro. ran two sound races, leaving the impression that he mav do better at his next appearance. The Great Northern Derby candidate Übakim was not discredited in being beaten into fourth in the first division o? the Eureka Hnndicap and some improvement can be expected at his next attempt. Silver Plane, who cut Übakim from third money, ran her best race. She was recently tried at the trotting gait without success.
