Botorua. NORTHERN RIFLE RANGES (0.C.) WHANGAREI. Wednesday . Extensive alterations have been completed to the Whangarei riflo range, which has now been brought up to military standard. The work, which has been carried out bv the Public Works Department, included the formation of new butts and new firing mounds at the various The longest range that can bo used is 500 yards. The range is being used by the various home defence units in Whangarei. Units in camp have previously had to carry out shooting practices on the 30 yards range, close to the town. With the work having been carried out entirely by members of the Home Guard, the Dargaville rifle ran£e is'also now completed and in use. The guard worked consistently at the range for some time and made a good job of the necessary alterations to bring the range up to the required standard. Here the longest range now prepared is 600 yards, but 'the land is available for greater distances, if necessary. TAXI LICENCE SOUGHT j Evidence of the development of Buckland's Beach as a residential area was given when an application for a taxi licence for the district was made by V. S. Rogers at a sitting of the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, yesterday. The population at the beach, where applicant was a storekeeper, was between 500 and 600, witnesses stated. That increased to between 1600 and 2000 in the summer. The nearest taxi was at Howick, four miles away. Decision was reserved. "THE QUAKER GIRL" Delightful melodies, genuine comedy and picturesque scenery are main ingredients of the London musical comedy "The Quaker Girl," which is to be "staged at His Majesty's Theatre on Saturday afternoon and evening next and the following six nights by the Auckland Light Opera Company. The booking is reported to be heavy.
