NINETIETH BIRTHDAY
MRS. ALICE HOOKER A woman with many vivid m.emories of early Auckland, Mrs. Alice Hooker, of 26 Eversleigh Road. Takapuna, will celebrate her 90th birthday on Thursday. A daughter of the late Mr. Charles Whittard, Mrs. Hooker was born in Cheltenham, England. Sue came to Auckland in 1861 in the vessel Egmont, and her father was for some time on the staff of the newspaper Southern Cross. The ship in which they journeyed to New Zealand was wrecked on the return voyage to England.
At the age of 21, Mrs. Hooker went to Levuka, Fiji, to marry Mr. B. Hooker, formerly of Exeter, Devonshire. After living in Fiji for about 18 vears, they returned to Auckland. Mr. 'Hooker died 10 years ago. Mrs. Hooker is still in the best of health. With members of her family she enjoyed an outing on Saturday at the Parnell Park rose garden. Mrs. Hooker has seven children, 25 grandchildren arid 26 great-grandchildren living.
