CHURCH UNION
METHODIST SUGGESTIONS Recommendations on the proposed union between the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches were adopted at the annual synod of the Auckland district of the Methodist Church yesterday. A report on the proposed union was presented by Dr. C. H. Laws. This stated that at a gathering of the representatives of the three Churches in Christchurch last August a proposed basis of union was produced which had been presented to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church and accepted with one dissentient voice. This proposed basis was to be presented at the conference of the Methodist Church in February and at the Congregational Union the following month. The Synod yesterday received the report and recorded its appreciation of the care and thoroughness with which the general committee had dealt with these important matters during the year, and, without expressing an opinion upon the basis yet to be submitted to conference, trusted that such a union would be attained in the near future. It was decided to recommend to conference that the basis proposed be submitted not only to synods but also to circuit quarterly meetings, which should report to the general committee-by July 31 next.
