SLOUCH HATS

Sir, —The first slouch hats for New Zealand soldiers were worn by the South African troops that left Wellington. The puggarees were about seven yards long, and were used for bandages and other purposes. These hats were made of all fur, and not wool as those now supplied. The weight of the crown being in proportion to the brim made them capable of standing any crease. It was not until the Baden-Powell shape came into vogue that the original shape was abandoned. The original hat was supplied by Charles Hill and Sons, ,of Wellington. The writer delivered the first 1200 to the camp at Karori. * Edwin J. Hill.
