MOTOR-CAR DEAL
ATTEMPTED FRAUD ALLEGED (0.C.) HAMILTON, Monday A salesman, Victor Edward Montague Hulton-Harrop, aged 28, appeared before justices in Hamilton to-day on a charge of attempting to defraud Alfred Henry Derby hy falsely representing that a car sold by him to Derby was accused's property and free from encumbrance. Accused, who was represented by Mr. W. H. Adams, pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given that accused in April, 1940, agreed to sell his car to Derby for £240 and that Derby's car would be taken as a deposit of £IOO. The remainder of the money was to be paid to accused in post-dated cheques. Accused was alleged to have informed Derby that he had paid cash for his car and on this understanding the sale was agreed upon. In April, 1941, under a hire purchase agreement, accused owed £lO5 on the car which he had sold the previous year to Derby. It was alleged that when interviewed by the police, accused admitted selling the car to Derby without the authority of the finance company. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being allowed.
