LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS

.\avice mat it is proposed to amenu the pedestrian crossing regulations, which require the crossing markings to be illuminated so as to be visible from at least 100 feet, was contained in a letter received from the Commissioner of Transport. Mr. G. L. Laurenson, at a meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council last night. It is proposed to amend the regulations to require instead that the indicating black and white posts and also the outline of a pedestrian on the crossing be visible from the specified distance. This requirement would constitute the minimum standard of lighting considered necessary. The street lamps would, it was understood, remain shrouded, the letter continued. but it had been suggested that the illumination desired could b» achieved by moving existing lamps or placing additional shrouded lamps at the crossings.

The council considered that a standard of pedestrian crossing lighting for the Dominion should be given. The letter had not cleared np the position as only a minimum lighting requirement had been made and at present no limit was set. It was decided to write to Mr. Laurenson pointing out the defects of the proposed system and stating it would be preferable for the Dominion Lighting Controller to lay down a standard for NewZeal and.
