UNIVERSITY TESTS
CHANGE IN THE SYSTEM Under an arrangement adopted by the New Zealand University Senate in 1940, students at all university colleges sitting for the annual "stage one" degree examinations are being examined for the first time this year by their own teachers instead of by external examiners appointed by the university.
The change is regarded as of importance because it affords a measure of decentralisation and autonomy which has long be desired in some quarters. After the marking of the papers the results will be reviewed by the professorial board of each college and a report, made to the university. The system applies to examinations for the whole range of degrees, including medicine, dentistry, engineering and agriculture. About .300 students are sitting at Auckland University College this month.
The higher stage examinations, which arc not affected by the change, will be held in the usual way next month, when about 500 Auckland students are to sit.
