LABOUR PROBLEM
DAIRY FACTORIES POSITION BECOMING ACUTE (0.C.) HAMILTON, Monday The difficulties in stuffing the cheese factories of the Waikato were illustrated by -Mr. W. G. Kirkman, factory superintendent for the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company, Limited, when giving evidence before the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board at Hamilton to-day in support of appeals of several reservists who were employed by the company. Mr. Kirkman quoted from a letter written by the manager of one of the company's cheese factories. In this the manager stated that the position was getting desperate. The chairman, Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M asked if married men were coming forward to assist in factories. If married men engaged in non-essential industries were not prepared to work in dairy factories and on dairy farms, even at some inconvenience, the}' could have no complaint if they were called up for service overseas. Married men should be willing to make some sacrifice to keep essential industries going. Unless they came forward and offered their services, single men would have to be retained.
Mr. Kirkman said the staffing position at some of the company's factories iva? becoming acute. The company had engaged married men from Hastings.
