DEATH OF ARTIST
SIR JOHN LONGSTAFF EMINENT AUSTRALIAN (Reed. 8.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 1 The death has occurred of Sir John Longstaff, the Australian portrait painter, at the age of 79. Sir John Longstaff was born in C'lunes, Victoria, and as a young man won the first travelling scholarship given by the Victorian Government for his painting "Breaking the News." lie had been on exhibitor at the Paris Salon since 1.891. and at. the Ro.val Academy since 1891!. His pictures included "Burke and \A ills at Cooper's Creek" arid numerous portraits, including King Edward VII. and Queen Alexandra, in the Sydney National Gallery. He won the Archibald Prize four times and was created a knight bachelor in 192£.
