CRICKET SEASON
SUBURBAN ASSOCIATION ONE-DAY PLAY DISCUSSED A high standard of play was maintained in all grades throughout the season, stated the report of the Auckland City and buburban Cricket Association, presented at the annual meeting last night. Tne president, Mr. I. Elliott, congratulated the association on its successful season, and, judging from the enthusiasm shown already, he said there was every reason to anticipate another good year. Mr. Elliott remarked that the effort of every sportsman was required to assist in winning the war. However, he was not one to advocate the suspension of any decent sport during the war period, and he appealed for support to carry on as usual. Those too old for military service must have all recreation possible, Mr. Elliott continued, and younger players needed cricket to keep them fit and to maintain the good spirit of sportsmanship necessary in army training. The Royal Air Force Club was a welcome addition to the senior competition, the president said, and he hoped for its continued support. The gathering stood in silence as a mark of respect to members who had paid the supreme sacrifice in the various theatres ° A 2 health v financial statement was presented, the credit balance being £lO9 Gs <d. Receipts for the year totalled £306 I<s 2d and the expenditure was £24 < lOs <a. J.no officials were to be congratulated on this position, said Mr. Elliott. The question of playing one-day or twoday matches was keenly discussed. . l Lieutenant A. F. Ellis said the Air Force was greatly in favour of one-day cricket as this was the only solution to fieldinga team each Saturday Many of the personnel would be on duty on alternate weeks.. Mr. A. O. Kerr said he favoured continuing two-day matches. Should a decision be made to Dlay one-day games, the hours.of play would have to be extended, and no time lnint placed on batting periods. Mr. J. Ball eaid that an objection to one-day cricket was that a number of batsmen would not get a strike, and this may cause discontent. He suggested that one-day cricket be given a trial for a number of Saturdays in the first round. The cuestion will bo decided at the next meeting of the management committee. Mr. J. Palmer- sought a ruling as to the position of an unfinancial player belonging to a club which, owing to the war had ceased to function, who desiredto p ay with another senior club. Mr. J.
