avondale club favourites do poorly RAKANUI annexes the cup route march takes sprint Only two favourites, Rakanui (place on ly)*and Hinkler (each-way), were nlaced on the opening day of the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting on Saturday, and there were some good dividends. Three of the winners, Bonny p a y Air Port and Route March, and on e'of the minor place-get tors, First Edition, paid double figures, and good returns were also made by Harmony aad Foxtoon. The outstanding performance was that, of ■Rakanui in winning the Avondale Cup from nd to end. The minor places were filled by ffildore and British Talent. The three-year-id Route March also recorded a fine effort f„ winning the Flying Handicap from GayV amtSiire Pay. The Avondale Stakes nl ' es won in most convincing fashion by SLnv Pav who smothered the field over the ■P.V half-furlong to score running away from Tudor Hose and Beau \ aals. COMMENT ON FORM VICTORY OF NEENAH maxown captures hurdles OVERDUE WIN FOR FOXTOON BY ARCHER Jumping out smartly, the third j ancy Neenah was never off the bit in the trial l'tate and finally won very easily from Bronze Meter, who dedicated ,I'irst Edition by a length and a-quarter. Pleuron ran on for fourth, followed by Sir Dingle, Vafer Flame, Last Survey, Bramble Song* Foxlore ami Gayjax.

tn J Lv2 ul !f ha . Vo , ta^ cn f ! VPI 7 « ot)d maiden to bju defeated Neenah, who is a halfvn,), 1 "; >»' I'oxbridge, to the good gallopers -N.ni.ikia and Suleiman. Neenah had raced only once previously and should soon win Ins way out of the hack class. Bronze Meter and i'lrst Edition, who paid double figures, were always well placed. The favourite Foxh!, r n,. m Hf up ," ' ot , o£ Sround after being o.ullj left, and would have been in it with an even jump out. Sir Dingle and Bramble bong were running on at the end. Last Surrey showed a lot of speed only to tire in the last turlong. j ! I "\ ",V r d fancy Black Musk attempted to lead all the way in the Eiugsland Hurdles and it was only in the last few strides that he was headed by Maxown, who became prominent in fourth position crossing the top. Lapidarian, second round the turn, was a fair third and Belsander was fourth ahead of Bright Idea, Brazilian, Bisquit, Knight of Australia and Prival, who were strung out. Maxown stayed just too well for Black Musk. Belsander made a promising showing, being well up throughout, and he should improve. Ihe favourites Brazilian and Prival never flattered the hopes of their admirers. Brazilian made up ground in the last few furlongs after being too far back to have any chance. An inquiry was held into the running of Brazilian, the stewards accepting the explanation of his connections and taking no action.

Good Run on Rails Splendidly ridden by the apprentice W. Elisor, Harmony finished attractively on the rails to win the Henderson Handicap from the topweight Expellant, who looked like winning when ho ran past the leaders at the distance.' After Kadina and Verulam had shown out early, Miss Jose and Silver Clarion went on in the lead to make play into the straight from a bunch comprising Golden Bonnet Kadina, Classic, Expellant, Empire Rose. Verulam and Harmony. Expellant reached the front at the distance, but Harmony came fast on the rails and beat him by a neck. Town Survey came from well back to be a length away third and Elise, who began from the extreme outside, was fourth ahead of Lucky Lulu, running on well. Verulam, Silver Clarion and Miss Jose.' Empire Rose and Silver Clarion, who drew No. 15, displayed plenty of speed but failed to run on. The second and first favourite Rakanui was responsible for a meritorious performance in winning the Avondale Cup from end to end, staying on with the utmost sameness when challenged by Wildore in the last furlong. Britisli Talent, Noble Fox, Aero King, Te Kawiti and Wildore were in close order behind Rakanui at the turn and Wildore finished best of these to run the winner to half a length. British Talent battled on gamely to tie a creditable third, and The Dozer finished strongly from a good w-ay back for fourth ahead of Lovaals, Erndale, Amigo, King Rey, Te Kawiti and The Cardinal. The placed horses all ran up to their best form and The Dozer made a strong run at the end. The Cardinal never looked likely, although he made up ground on the outside in the straight. Erndale also made an effort on the outside. ]S!oble Fox was prominent until the last furlong. Alexcelia was never iu the picture. Bonny Pay Finishes Well

Finishing brilliantly on the outside, Bonny Pay won the Avondale Stakes running away and at double" figures. Gentry and Tudor Hose were the early loaders and "they were disputing the lead at the distance, where Beau Vaals was coming on the inside and Bonny Pay making a run on the outside. Over the last 50 yards Bonny Pay smothered the opposition and she won by two lengths from Tudor Rot<e, who defeated Beau Vaals by a length. Gentry weakened into fourth, succeeded by Ballymacad, Rero Tore, Our Joy and Marquex. The winner is a smartlooking gelding by Autopay from Bonny Gay, who was a useful performer, and was in more forward condition than many of the others. Tweedsmuir failed to jump out well from No. 1. Beau Vaals began from No. 20 at the barrier, whereas the winner bad Xo S and Tudor Hose No. 13.

Finishing attractively on the rails and well ridden by R. W. McTavish, the hitherto disappointing Air Port brought off a surprise in winning, the Champion Hack Plate. The second favourite Prince Louis attempted to lead all the. way and he made play :into the straight from Korotangi, Babrow. Hoararth. Landveyor, Regal Fox and Air Port. Near the distance Landveyor made an effort on the outside and, then Air Port came fast on the outside. Air Port gradually overtook Prince Louis and beat him by a length and a-quarter,. with Landveyor half a length away third. The favourite Regal Fox, after beins checked on the rails below the distance and moving out several horses, was fourth ahead of Korotangi, Court Favourite, Babrow and Hogarth. A Fine Performance

The three-year-old Route March registered a fine performance in winning the Flying Handicap at double figures. After Cora to, Phaleron, Gaymiss and Queen City had shown out early. Route March ran to the fiont an the end of a furlong and he led into the straight from Sure Pay, Corato, Transmitter, Gaymiss, Trig Station and le Haki. Ronle March still led at the distance and he stalled off a challenge from Gaymiss to Win by a neck. Sure Pay batt ed on to be three-cji.arters of a length away third, and Tr> Station also ran on for fourth ahead of Cora* > Chary, Phaleron, Kraal and Be;ui Leon. Route March was one of the early favourite.- but ho went out of favour and was onlv seventh fancy in the betting. He showed "great brilliance early and ran on i-amclv under pressure at the hnish. Gajmiss ran her best race for some time, making a fine effort after being squeezed back early. It was with a strong finishing run that the fifth fancy Foxtoon came through near the inside to win the Swanson Handicap after being third to last at the turn. Hinkler and Royal showed out early, Valley Maid and Wharemanea going ahead at the e'id of t fnrloiiE to lead into the straight from Rovil Jav Prince Rewa and Foxtoon, with Hinkler last Valley Maid and Hoya Jay were fighting for the lead at the distance when Foxtoon made an effort. I oxtoon got mi in the last couple of strides to win b.v rlf i head from Royal Jay. Hinklor came rider.
