PROTECTION SOCIETY

SOCIAL SERVICE WORK A total of 106 rases, 51 of which were new, was dealt with during the past month, according to reports presented at the monthly executive meeting of the Society for'the Protection of Women and Children this week. Mr. I). Donaldson presided. The sum of £2oo was handled through the office on behalf of wives and children. Interviews at the office numbered 469, and the inspector attended the Courts six times. Help was given by the society to a number of elderly tenants of a house in the city which had been sub-let. A writ for eviction had been granted the owner by the Supreme Court and was carried into effect, and the society assisted the evicted tenants in finding homes. It was reported that the usual monthly quota of subscriptions had been received, and the committee expressed its gratification that the public remained loyal to the needs of the society, which continued to carry on its work of community service. Thanks were also expressed to the New Women's Club for its gift of £lO to the ladies' committee. This will be used for the relief of distress in special cases.
