HEADMASTER RETIRES MR. WILLIAM H. MOYES SERVICE TO EDUCATION (0.C.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday The resignation of Mr. William Henry Moyes, M.A., B.Sc., from the headmastership of the New Plymouth Boys' High School, because of ill-health, was received by the High School Board last night. Mr. Moyes has filled the position for 29 years and is only the second headmaster the school has had in its 59 years of existence. Mr. Moves, who is 59 years of age, was educated at Nelson. He entered Nelson College as a scholarship winner in 1895, in which year he was top of the district. In 1897 he won a college scholarship, the next year he was made a prefect and in 1901 he was head boy. He continued his studies at Canterbury College and took his B.A. degree in 1902. In 1903 he was appointed demonstrator in physics at Canterbury College and took his M.A. degree in 1904 and his B.Sc. degree in 1905. Period at King's College ' In 1906 he returned to Nelson as assistant master and then went to Timaru as science master. He returned to Nelson as first assistant before accepting the post of mathematics master at King's College, Auckland, from where he went to New Plymouth.
Mr. Moyes' record was distinguished by more than scholastic success. He was associated with the production of school magazines and the conduct of debating clubs and he held the rank of captain in the cadets. He also made his mark as an athlete, having captained cricket and football teams and having represented Canterbury and New Zealand in university athletics. He set a New Zealand University record for the quarter-mile. Emphasis on Citizenship When he became headmaster at New Plymouth in 1912 he did not set out to produce brilliant scholars or footballers, but aimed at giving each boy a training that would nt him to fill his place in the life of the community. Just as Mr. Moyes emphasised the training of citizens, so he demonstrated it by example. He played his full share in the life of the community, particularly in recreational avenues. Recognition his work and interest was given when he was appointed one of the original members of the New Zealand Physical Welfare and Recreational Council. He played an important part in the organisation of the centenary celebrations and has given yeoman service to patriotic causes.
