SAILORS' GRAVES

ONEHUNGA RENOVATIONS The graves of members of the complement of H.M.S. Niger and HALS. Orpheus in St. Peter's Cemetery, Onehunga, have been renovated by the Government. The memorials are of heart of kauri, about 4in. thick, and date back to 1860. Thev are set in concrete and are periodically repainted. One grave is that of George Perry, captain of the forecastle of H.M.S. Niger, who died in 18G0, and another is that of Jas. Griffiths, able seaman, of the Niger, who was drowned in the Manukau Harbour in Near by is the grave of the Rev. Charles H. Ha*lewood, chaplain of H.M.S. Orpheus, which was wrecked on the Manukau Bar in 180'}.
