WOOL FOR KNITTING
EFFORTS OF EIGHT MILLS OUTPUT OF 10.400L8. A MONTH [by telegraph— press association] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Addressing the annual meeting of tlie Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company, the chairman, Mr. C. R. Barber, referring to the vexed question of the shortage of yarn for home knitting, said the mill had made as much as possible without slacking on military orders, and actually the turnover for domestic wool was two and a-half times greater than in 1940. There were now eight mills supplying the Defence Purchase Board with 10,4001b. of knitting wool a month. This was allocated by national patriotic committees to women.. It would be possible in normal times for New Zealand mills to cover the quantity of wool formerly imported for domestic use, but Government orders for uniform cloth and necessary civilian requirements had to take precedence.
Pointing out the difficulty already experienced in manning mills, Mr. Barber scouted the idea that 24 hours a day in mills was possible.
