FLYING CROSS AWARD

BOMBING OF FUEL DEPOT I" BY TELEGRArn—PRESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Sunday The citation concerning the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to PilotOfficer K. S. Peterson, of the Royal Air Force, says that one night in July this officer was navigator and bomb-aimer of an aircraft detailed to attack an enemy fuel depot. The target area was obscured by cloud, and the pilot found it necessary to descend to 2500 ft. to locate the objective. The first run was made in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, the aircraft being hit in several places. Some bombs were dropped, but the attack was not considered satisfactory. A second run was made to get a sufficiently good sight on the target. On the third run, direct hits on storage tanks were obtained. Both the pilot and Pilot-Officer Peterson displayed outstanding courage, devotion to duty and skill in difficult and dangerous conditions.

Pilot-Officer Peterson is a son of Captain P. S. Peterson, harbourmaster at Wellington. He was born in Auckland in 1913 and educated in Wellington.
