Soldier Patients There are now over 80 soldier patients in the new Hamilton West School, which has been taken over as an annexe to the Waikato Hospital. Most of them are suffering from mumps and measles and have been admitted from the Cambridge and Ngaruawahia camps. > More Radio Licences

In the past year the number of licensed radio receivers in the Dominion has increased by more than 12,000. Extensive inquiries have failed to establish the identity of the elderly man who died in tho Auckland Hospital on Monday after being knocked down hv a motor-car in Hobson Street on Saturday night. A description circulated by the police stated that he was aged about 60. was sft. 6in. tall, slightly built, with a fresh complexion and grey thinning hair.

New Government Building Tho new Government building in Jean Batten Place is almost finished, and it is expected that the electrical installation will bo connected to the city supply shortly. An unusual feature is the erection in the basement of a sub-station, while the building has an electric kitchen on the top floor and an automatic fire alarm system. City Rates Of approximately 34,000 Auckland City rate demands for the current year, 28,000 have been sent out from the treasury since the rates were struck on July 4. The 10 per cent penalty for late payment becomes due six months and 14 days after the date of the individual demand. Few Boys Seek Work In reply to an advertisement for 30 message boys, the Post Office has received only five applications. It was stated by an official yesterday that, although there was no necessity to employ girls as messengers at present; the possibility might have to be considered if more youths were not available in the near future. It was pointed out that the public could not expect peace-time service but, although there were sevenal minor delays, the system was generally satisfactory.

Vegetables Plentiful As a result of the recent heavy rain and mild weather, the heaviest supply of vegetables handled this year was offered at tho City Markets yesterday. Cauliflowers, in particular, were far in excess of requirements and sold at from Is 6d to 3s 6d a sack, compared with 5s and 7s 6d on Friday. IJetailers were selling them at 4d and *6d' each. Large quantities of cabbages, pumpkins, carrots, celery and briissels sprouts also were obtainable. Kumaras were plentiful, consignments from Tatiranga selling at from 7s to 12s a bag and the Island variety at 3d per «lb. A Czech Anzac Serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt as a field ambulance driver is a young Czech who was formerly in the army of his native country. Demobilised from an officers' training unit when the Czechoslovak army was virtually disbanded after Munich, he arrived in Now Zealand in February, 1939. and obtained employment as a driver. On the outbreak of war ho sought to enlist, but as he was an alien some time passed before his persistence was rewarded, and he arrived in the Middle East with a rifle battalion.
