ELLERSLIE WORK

SOME USEFUL EFFORTS VALMINT, ROYAL MESSAGE SILVER CLARION MOVES WELL BY ARCHER Severn 1 trainers took advantage of the improved conditions nt Ellerslie yesterday to indulge their horses in useful working gallops. The No 3 grass was available and the going was holding. The best, effort was recorded by Valmint (Markwiek) and Royal Message (D. Green), who ran five furlongs in 1.7 3-5, the lirst two in 275. They are well forward nnd a little fast work should make them lit for the early meetings. Silver Clarion (Harris) moved nicely over three i'urlungs in 41 3-ss. Following his success iri the Cambria Handicap at Ellerslie in November, Silver Clarion was given a spell and he has made good progress since his return. It should not take him long to win his way out of the hack class Golden Bonnet (T. Green), after running the first two in 275, w#s easing up at the end of five furlongs in 1.0 3-5. She is looking well. Nettarlon (Markwiek) placed threo furlongs behind in 435. Ho failed to show any form in two starts, when previously in training, but moves smoothly and looks good enough to be a prospect in minor company ns a three-year-old. Bronzo (Cameron) completed useful work with threo furlongs in •It 3-ss. Bronzo displayed promising form when he finished second to Radiant Vaals in the first division of the Jervois Handicap at the June meeting, and, although he failed at his next attempt, ho should be an early winner in minor company. Northlander (McKinnon) worked over a round, running the last three furlongs in 43 3-sa. He is shaping satisfactorily in his education as a jumper, but is a delicate customer who might take time to become solid. Bronze Emerald (Cameron) covered four furlongs in 54 t-.-is. lie is showing promise as a jumper and has solid condition after his racing during the winter. Sir Cameron (D. Green) and Brazilian (light boy) strode over six furlongs in 1.27. Sir Cameron tins freshened up splendidly since racing in June, when be performed disappointingly, and he should be a prospect for one of tile spring handicaps. Brazilian has lately accomplished some useful schooling and is making very satisfactory progress in his education as a juniper. „ Rival (Pascoe) and Pertinax (Fergus) were schooled over the steeplechase fences on the flat. On the first occasion Pertinax unseated his rider at the second fence of the double and at the second attempt he did much better, although he. swerved and jumped high. Pertinax seems to have lost some of his confidence as a result of his fall on the third day of the Great Northern meeting, but a little schooling should soon restore it. Rival jumped cleanly throughout and is much improved. Biddy Girl was schooled over the pony hurdles. She refused at first, lacking confidence after a fall recently, but she was eventually induced to jump and took the fences very carefully. Biddy Girl is now under the care of J. Chisholni, who also added to his team recently the rising three-year-old June Tide. ~ , , , A recent addition to the active brigade is a rising two-year-old filly by Bronze r.agle from Morning Sun. She is being prepared by W. J. Fergus, who is eettinsr a fair-sized team together. The number of rising two-year-olds in work at Ellerslie is the largest for some years and there is some very promising material among them. One nf the most forward is Transcend, by Gyneriiim from Ladv Bentinck. He is thriving splendidly. After being on the easy list for several weeks with an abscess under the jaw, Clinch is again working regularly, and he is very fresh. Clinch seems subject to cold and he has had several setbacks during the past year, otherwise he might have a better record than he possesses. Under all the circumstances, E. George did extremely well to win three races with him this season. Probably one of the things that stands to Clinch is that he does not require a great deal of work to get him tit.

JUVENILE PACERS

CANDIDATES FOR DERBY BY ABAYDO3 Although only a few two-year-old pacers have resumed work with a view to early three-year-old engagements, the outlook for a good crop vf young horses in the Auckland Province for the new season is bright. The best youngsters this season _ were Symphony, F'ree Machine, Albert Tracey, Dans Triumph and Übakim, but Mihini Tiri, Biddy Girl, Right Ring, Tootrue, Lovely Jewel and Direct Jewel revealed promise.Symphony won the two-year-old Trotting Stakes at Epsom in February like a really good filly, while the performance of the run-ner-up, Free Machine, was equally attractive Both fillies displayed speed and courage, and they should play a prominent part in any events they contest next term. Übakim, who was third, was not as forward as tho other two, but his effort was impressive. A full-brother to Tsana, Übakim should improve with age and racing. Albert Tracey, who, like Free Machine, is by Auto Machine, won at the Auckland matinee, and Dan's Triumph, a good-looking son of Dan Direct, won a similar event at Hamilton. Albert Tracey was unlucky at the start of tho Trotting Stakes. Dan's Triumph did not contest tho classic owing to a severe t0 Although he ran green, Right King made a deep impression when produced at Knsom. and Tootrue also displayed promise. Both are progeny of Kingtrue. Two b.v Jewel Pointer, Lovely Jewel am Direct Jewel, are shapely fillies who shnu.d make useful progress. Mihini Tiri is a smart youngster i»y Auto Machine, and liitltly tiirl, for the brief time she was in training, revealed a good deal of promise. The. appearance of these youngsters next season will bo awaited with interest as several c'iiim nn in the ureal isoiiiicru Trillins Derby.
