TROTTING SIRES
BEST AMERICAN BLOOD
RECORD OF LOGAN POINTER JACK POTTS MAKES HISTORY BY ABAYDOS The American-bred pacing stallion Jack Potts, who when raced was a highclass performer, has proved an asset to the breeding industry of the Dominion in the same way as his illustrious predecessors, Harold Dillon, Logan Pointer, Nelson Bingen, Wrack and Rey de Oro, all of whom at various stages ranked as leading sires in New Zealand. Progeny of Jack Potts won 131 races this season, eclipsing the record figures, 122 last term. Prior to that Rey de Oro, with 105 wins in 1035-36, held pride of place. Jack Potts has row headed the sires' list for four consecutive seasons, during which ho secured 452 firsts, representing a splendid average of 113. In the four years, progeny of Jack Potts have earned £110,872. The sires" competition was inaugurated in 1015-16, when Rothschild, who was bred in New South Wales, headed the list with 41. He was by Childe Harold from the American mare Belle Briggs, both descendants of Hambletonia.) 10. Belle Briggs was bought for racing, but injured herself while being taken off the vessel in Sydney, and was secured by Mr. A. Towns for breeding purposes.
Sire of Author Dillon Harold Dillon, imported In 1905 by Mr. E. E. Lelievre, of Akaroa, took the honours in 11)16-17 with 50, and maintained the position for the next four seasons. During his successful period Harold Dillon scored 224 v in.s for £49,200. Undoubtedly his greatest representative was Author Dillon, winner of the New Zealand Derby Stakes, New Zealand Cup and Frec-for-AU, the last-named event three times in succession. Harold Dillon was by Sidney Dillon (sire of Lou Dillon, 1.58%), from Guycara (dam of Walter Dillon, 2.10 Vi), by Guy Wilkes from Hiscari, by Director, sire of many in.! the 2.5 class. In 1021-22 .two horses. Wild wood Junior and Logan Pointer, were equal with 39. Wild- 1 wood Junior, twice winner of the New Zealand Cup was bred in Christchurch and is the only Dominion sire to have his name on the list. He was by Wildwood from the great brood mare Thelma, who also produced, to Wildwood Junior, Authoress, dam of Author Dillon. Logan Pointer was imported by Free Holmes in .1015, and for six years following the dead-heat with Wildwood Junior was at the head of the list. Logan Pointer was displaced in 1928-20 and 1020-30 by Nelson Bingen, but regained the lead in 1930*31. Logan Pointer's best tally was 87 in 1925-26. In the eight seasons his progeny earned £170.408. 'Logan Pointer, who was by Star Pointer, 1 50% (son of Rrown Hal) from Efiie Logan, died in 1023. Very few of his sons were left entire, but two, Jewel Pointer and Prince Pointer, both big stake-earners, are producing winners. A Champion Pacer The greatest of the line, however, was the champion pacer Harold Logan, holder of the world's two miles race record, 4.12 2-5. Logan Pointer mares are proving excellent matrons arid mate very successfully with Jack Potts. Nelson Bingen, although only twice head of the list, was several times second to Logan Pointer. By Bingen, from Suzette Baron, by Baron Wilkes, Nelson Bingen was imported by Mr. Lelievre and produced many of the best trotters the Dominion has had. He died a few years ago at Mangere. Wrack, by Peter the Great—Corona Mac, had three seasons as leading sire, during which he secured 220 wins for £30,453. Wrack produced high-class pacers and trotters, his best being Indianapolis, thrice winner of the New Zealand Cup, and the doublegaited Wrackler, who holds the unique record of winning the New Zealand Cup and Dominion Trotting Handicap. Key de Oro held sway in 1031-32 and again in 1035-30 and 1936-37, his total for the period being 235 and £51,245 in stakes. Rey de Oro was by Copa do Oro, 1.50. from Snbito, dam of many in the 2.10 section, and his progeny were speedy. The best of the Hey de Oro family was Eoi I'Or, who holds the Epsom two miles record, 4.14 1-5. Jack Potts is by Walter Direct (son of Direct Hal) from Margaret Steiner, by Steiner from Temple T., whose dam, Temple, was by Brown Hal. grandsire of Logan Pointer. The Hal line, recognised for its greatness in America, appears on both sides in the pedigree of Jack Potts.
