AUCKLAND PIONEER
NINETY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY A pioneer resident of Auckland, Mr. John Edgerley, of 2 Edgorlev Avenue. Epsom, will celebrate his 95th birthday on Saturday. Mr. Edgerley was born in Epsom, close to his present home, and was baptised in St. Thomas' Church, now in ruins, at Tamaki.
At the age of 16, during the Maori Wars, he joined the Remuera volunteers and later the No. 3 Parnell Company commanded by Major Heaphy, V.C. After spending some time on the Thames goldfields Mr. Edgerley went to Fiji in the early 'seventies and was on a plantation on the Rewa River for several years. While in Fiji he took part in the Ba expedition, when a punitive force was sent against the cannibal mountain tribes, and he saw King Thakombau's forces capture tho rebels' last stronghold. Mr. Edgcrlev returned to Auckland in the 'eighties and married Miss Isabel Menzies, of Tamaki. He was engnged in the building trade in Melbourne for several years and continued iri this business in Auckland until his retirement.
