FLYING LOSSES

AUCKLANDER MISSING YOUNG GUNNER HOLDER OF DECORATION Sergeant Peter Victor McLaren, who has been reported missing on air operations, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal in January and is believed to have been the first New Zealand air gunner to have received the decoration. He is the son of Mrs. Kathleen McLaren, of Point Chevalier, and is about 22.

On the occasion of the award it was stated that during an air operation Sergeant McLaren's aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter, but

although harassed by fire he succeeded in shooting it down. This was said to be but one instance of his gallantry and devotion to duty, which had been a source of inspiration to other members ol his squadron. Sergeant McLaren completed his education at the Kowhai Intermediate School. He was employed by Ross and Glendining, Limited, before leaving to Join the Royal Air Force in March, 1941). He was a member of the Suburbs Rugbv Football Club, the Point Chevalier Cricket Club and the Manukau Cycling Club. FLYING ACCIDENT SERGEANT A. R, TOUT Advice has been received that Sergeant Albert Richard Tout, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Tout, of Manuka Road. Birkdale, is missing as a result of a flying accident. Sergeant Tout, a radio operator and air gunner on active service overseas, was a member of the crew of an aircraft that failed to return to its base on June 30.

Leaving Auckland in July last year. Sergeant Tout, who was educated at the "Northcote High School, is 22 years of age. He was a keen cyclist.
