JiJj 4 A member of the Royal New Zea.3a.ad Air Force front New Plymouth, 'Sergeant Merryti Evans, has been awarded " the Distinguished Flying Medal. The citation says Sergeant Evans was the : captain of aa aeroplane . which., on a . sight in June, carried oat an attack' on a dock at Rotterdam.
Visibility was poor, but Sergeant Evans, in spite of heavy anti-aircraf: and searchlight activity and the presence of enemy fighters, fie* over the area for an hoar to ensure that the objective was accurately bombed. Filially, be released bis bombs, which were seen to burst on .or very close to the dock.
Then, while attacked by a Messerschniitt 110 while returning to his • base. Sergeant Evans, bv excellent airmanship. enabled his rear gamier to fire a burst at the attacker, which • caused the Messerschmiti to dive toi ward the sea out of control and it probably crashed. Sergeant Evan* has displayed leadership, skill tnd determination throughout.
