Mannequin Heralds of La Mode

By VANITY

"FOLLOWING what was once the custom of the famous French dressmakers in sending their mannequins to the outstanding social events as human advertisements of their goods, the big New York stores have started similar campaigns for attracting attention to the work of the clever designers they employ. One store, for example, has engaged the services of four beautiful red-heads who are on view at the gayest night spots, and important social galas, clad in the height of fashion as this store presents it. The fact that four red-heads were the ones selected is alone an up-to-date fashion point. Moat of the girls wear their hair in natural waves fairly long at the back and in a curled fringe over the brow. They are ail tali well-built girts chosen for their dramatic personalities as much as for their looks. The costumes in which they have appeared have been equally dramatic. They are in the latest shades, of course, these being oatmeal beiges, bright golds and greens, violet and navy. The dropped shoulder-line is shown in some models and dolman sleeves appear on some light-weight wool jackets to be worn with accordionpleated skirts. Spot and stripe fabrics are the ones most used for the first silk dresses, and huge cartwheel hats, like the one sketched, are a current New York fashion.
