LABOUR STRIFE
HELPING THE ENEMY
SOLDIER'S AMAZEMENT
"MAKING IT TOUGHER FOR US" (0.C.) HASTINGS, Friday
"I see by the New Zealand papers that there are a few strikes and stopwork outfits still going strong at home," writes a Hawke's Bay soldier to his parents in Hastings. "What is wrong with the chafs left over there ? I woujd like them to have the German air force on their tails for a day or two. Then they would get to work and lenH a hand to lick these Germans. It seems so silly having strikes when half the country is over here waiting for the stuff that others are -staving at home to produce, and some are squealing out about such oottv things. "We should all be prepared to work our hardest for our keep alone at a time as serious as this. They are expected to produce st>■ IT to keep us going, and it it is late getting here through stupid individuals not loading ship-> and so forth, it means it i- making it tougher for us. and God knows it is tough enough now. They are only helping the Germans, and in my opinion ami, in fact, in the opinion of all the boys over here, tliev deserve no better treatment than any Fifth Columnist. 1 hope they soon get things straightened out over there.
"It. does not feel so good when one is risking one's neck for about 7s a day, Sundays and all, and some chaps at home are holding things up by refusing to work on a Sunday for less than L'.'t lOs Gd for the day," concludes the writer. "Ii is ridiculous now when every elfort is needed to hold the Huns. The boys here say that they would like to ucr among tliem for a while. I do not think thoy can realise there, is a war on."
