BOMB FIRE RISK

SUPPLIES OF SAND

CITY COUNCIL POLICY

Re^lot, that only "a lamentably small proportion"' of Auckland householders had so iar interested themselves in procuring sand for extinguishing incendiary bombs was expressed in a letter received by the City Council last night from the Kmergenev Precautions Scheme Organisation, recommending local bodies in the metropolitan area to obtain supplies tor sale to people in their districts.

The town cleric. .Mr. Melling. reported that the council had decided in .May to supply sand free and to obtain an initial lot of 50 tons. The Mayor. Mr. .1. A. C. Allum. moved that the matter be referred to the city engineer. Mr. .1. Tyler, to make whatever arrangements were necessary. Mr. A. St. Clair Brown remarked that to supply 30,000 householders with 401b. of sand each would require about 515 tons, costing at least 27s a yard, plus the cost of storage bins at local depots and cartage charges. The Mayor said the proposal was that the city engineer should investigate and make arrangements to supply sand to householders who wanted it on a basis of cost. There was no intention of embarking on huge expenditure. Sand would be bought as required. The eliairmiin of the Works Committee, Mr. A. S. Bailey, said householders who failed to take protective measures were imposing a risk on their neighbours. He felt that the council should make a strong appeal to the public to co-operate. Tests had shown that not all kinds of sand were suitable, but it would be possible to supply an approved kind to each householder at a charge of Is or 2s, which no one should object to paying. The Mayor's motion was carried.
