Statements of receipts and expenditure of separate State accounts for the year ended March .'!! are given in an abstract of the public account for the period gazetted on Tuesday. Two of these accounts of special interest are the Social Security Fund and the War Fx penses Account. A.s already announced by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, tho ordinary revenue account of the Consolidated Fund for the past financial year produced n surplus of £1,726,000, revenue amounting to £ I0.4.')8,000 and expenditure to £•:}«,712,000.
The receipts of tho War Expenses Account total £35,995,753. Special war taxation produced £15,745,2-17, made up as follows:—lncome tax, £2.385,123; estate duties, £2.113,256; succession duties. £619,539; gift duties, £191.995; customs duties. £(550,019; beer duties, £228.5(51; sales tax, £2.248,825; gold export duty, £156,376; postage, £500.000; national security tax, £6,348.5 1(5. A further £18.152.483 was obtained by the following methods: Stock issued, £8.211,600; interest-free stock issued. £1,210,195; stock issued (National savings), £1,321.155; treasury bills issued, £1,140,000; treasury notes issued. £278.570; memorandum of security, £5,987.(561. Expenditure items in the War Expenses Account, include the following: Navy. £2.105.59S ; Army. Li 7.249,620; air. L7.-187,71)5; civil, (J27X.592; aeroplane lund, remittances and exchange for purchase of aeroplanes for the Royal Air Force. £91.305. Revenue of the Social Security Fund totalled I'll. 191,724. Of this sum the Social Security charge on salaries, wages and other income provider! £10,109.577 and the registration fee £6O-1.179. The amount transferred to the fund from the Consolidated Fund was £3.200,000. The net expenditure from the fund in the way of monetary benefits was £10,275.363, made up as follows:—Age benefits. £7,101.34(5; invalidity benefits, £999,618; widows' benefits, £83.6,367; sickness benefits, £279,580; family benefits, £411,811; miners' benefits, £88,656; orphans' benefits. £17,712; Maori War benefits, £7-13; unemployment benefits. £299,160; universal superannuation. £210.336. The previous year's expenditure on these benefits tot ailed £9,250,532.
