Teachers Killed Overseas The fact that six teachers formerly empk>vod by the Auckland Education Board had been killed while serving with the forces overseas was mentioned by the chairman, Mr. W J. Campbell, at the board meeting yesterday. On his motion it was decided to send letters of sympathy to the next-of-kin.

Late Mushrooms at Pukekohe Mushrooms have been gathered in considerable numbers in the Pukekohe district this month. Generally mushrooms are picked in Aprd at the *ci\ latest, the host month usually being February, but owing to the long spell of mild, wet weather this year their growth has continued exceptionally late. Although Pukekohe has had a few light frosts this winter, the heavy one recorded yesterday morning is expected to prevent the growth of any more mushrooms.

Basque Road Park Most of the earthwork undertaken in the formation of the new park and childien's playground near Basque Road, in the gullv between Newton Road and Eden Terrace, has been completed by the City Council, and a long stone retaining wall is being built across the property below the uppermost terrace fronting Exmouth Street. The second terrace, which will be the largest flat area in the park, promises to be a really useful playing space for the children of the neighbourhood.

Private Postal Bag Charge Advice that the charge for providing a private bag had been increased from £2 to. £lO a year was received by the Central Waikato Electric-Power Board yesterday from the Chief Postmaster at Hamilton Mr. A. M. Rosie. It was stated that the increase was made owing to the greater costs involved. The secretary, Mr. H. J Beeche,. said the Post Office had recently undertaken to provide the bag for a ve.ir for £2. The board decided to make a strong protest against the extent of the increase.

Single Men First Single liK'i, eligible for territorial training must undergo tlieir service before married men ;uo called into camp, according to Mr I. J. Goldstino. chairman of the Auckland Manpower Committee, in a pronouncement last night. "Unless single men are engaged in particularly essential work, now that married men have been called for enrolment in the general reserve and will perform camp service," he said, "the committee is of the opinion that single men must undergo service before married men are called into camp " Knitting Yarns

Additional licences for importation from Britain or Australia of wool-mend-ing balls and hand-knitting yarns will bo granted to importers, according to dvice received yesterday by merchants from the Customs Department. Whether such licences can be made effective in relieving the present acute scarcity of supplies, however, is regarded as very doubtful hv men in the trade. The licences will bo granted to the extent of 25 per cent of the value of importations of similar goods from the United Kingdom in 1938. When the fifth schedule was first issued, imports from the United Kingdom were cut by 25 per cent, and there was a ban on those from other countries. As difficulties arose in obtaining supplies from Britain, the department recently announced that importation under the licences could be made from Australia. Immediately after that announcement it was stated in Australia that woollen yarns would be reserved for Australian defence orders. Possibilities of supply from the British market, now subject to restrictions, are being investigated, but the situation is stated to be still obscure and unpromising,
