EXEMPTION FROM SERVICE

Sir.—-Your sub-leader on "Objections to Service" in Saturday's issue is certainly apposite, but you might with reason have carried the subject a stage further. Apart from conscientious objectors, many of whom are doubtless sincere, there are thousands of reservists who have obtained exemption on account of being employed in essential industries or for other reasons, as well as rejected on medical grounds. It might well he argued that these men should pay for their exemption in the lorm of a special tax, the proceeds of which should he earmarked to provide extra benefits lor their lellowciti/.eiis who are fighting on their behalf. Those who have sons or other near relatives in the Kxpeditionary Force would appreciate the justice of some such arrangement. R. S. W. HUNT.
