INTOXICATED IN MOTOR-CAR

GIFT OF WHISKY FOR POLICE (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Tnc.«day

A sentence of 10 days' imprisonment was imposed on John Peter McLennan, farmer, of Kauri, when he appeared before .Mr. R. Ferner, S.M., in the Whangarei Police Court on a charge of being intoxicated in charge oi" a motor-vehicle. Accused, whose licence was also cancelled lor three years, was stated io have twice been before the Court on similar charges, the last time in 1 n:u.

For the police. Sergeant W. J. ,B. Grainger said that McLennan had parked his car practically in the centre of the road and walked into the Whangarei police station with two bottles of whisky under his arms. He was well known to several of the police force, and he said that the whisky was a present for the policemen. Accused was intoxicated, and a doctor had certified that he was unfit to drive a motor-car.

Counsel said McLennan belonged to a well-known and respected family, and in this case was the victim of his own good nature. The whisky had been unopened and ho had merely wished to make a present to the policemen he knew. The doctor's certificate was not damaging, and counsel submitted it was not such as would warrant a term of imprisonment. A period of seven rears had elapsed since his last offence, and in view of accused's age he sought a fine rather than imprisonment.
