RAILWAY FARES

MEN OF ARMED FORCES Some concessions have been made in railway fares for members of the armed forces travelling by special trains, according to advice received yesterday > by the Auckland Chamber of Com? merco from the Auckland Metropolitan Patriotic Council. The Patriotic Council stated that its representations to the authorities had not progressed as well as the committee had hoped, and further action was under consideration. It had, however, secured a concession where a movement of a large number of men by special , trains was involved, such as from the camp at Waiouru to Auckland. In tins instance it had been 'informed that the fare in future would he 17s 10d instead of 28s. So far as members of the forces travelling individually were con- > cerned, the Railway Department stated .*■ that it had gone as far as it re ' a " sonably could be expected to go in way of granting concession fares, and _ it could nob consider the granting ot free warrants to men retained for instruction as non-commissioned oinoers.
