TAKANINI HORSES

TEAM FOE TE AWAMUTU TE KAWITI MUCH IMPROVED GAMOS RETURNING TO FORM • As a n sult of recent racing To Kawiti is bearing a greatly-improved appearance, and lie is expected to give a good account of himself in tho Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu on Saturday. Te Kawiti is a fine performer when at his best, and his latest track efforts indicate that it will not lie long before he regains his good form of the past. A proved mudlark. Gold Money Song was in his element when lie succeeded in the open sprint on the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting ond, although his form on the later days was not so good, there is no doubt that he is good on his day, Gold Money Song appears likely to be difficult to beat in the Paterangi Handicap at Te Awamutu. Looking more like his former self, Oamos threatens to make an early return to form as he is again doing well. Gnmos was one of the most consistent performers racing in the north Inst season, but he suffered a leg injury and it is a long time since he was a stake-earner. Gamos may not be long in returning to the winning list. A candidate for the Andrew Kay Memorial Steeplechase, Gay Movie is being trained by her owner, Mr. A. Walker, who has given her some hunting. Gay Movie has always I possessed a good deal of pace and, although . she was a failure on the flat, she may be i seen to greater advantage over the battens. If he reproduces his best form, British I Sovereign may prove one of the hardest to" heat in the Andrew Kay Memorial Steeplechase at Te Awamutu. Re disappointed at Ellerslie, where he usually races well. British Sovereign is a mass of condition and this will be a factor in his favour. Excellent efforts by Surpai at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting confirmed his previous good track displays, and also drew attention to his prospects of success among the hurdlers. He is an acceptor for the Orakau Hurdles at Te Awamutu and. although tho field contains some proved performers, he appeals as one likely to make a forward showing. Don Quex did not keep his engagement in the chief event at the Bay of Plenty meeting, but there is nothing amiss with him. Don Quex is among the acceptors for the Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu on Saturday and will probably fulfil his engagement if the track is not too heavy. He has yet to contest nn open handicap, but he may do well with his light impost. Among the lesser lights, the most likely of the Takanini horses in the Arapuni Hack Hapdicap is Air Port, who bears an improved appearance* after his race at Ellerslie. where he registered a good performance for one who has not raced for some time. Air Port may not be long in showing his worth. ARAPUNI HANDICAP DIVISIONS ARRANGED STARTING TIMES FOR WAIPA With -11 acceptors in the Arapuni Hack Handicap at the Waipa Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Te Awamutu 011 Saturday the race has been split into two divisions, which will be treated as separate races, each carrying the original stake of £l7O. Hinkler has been withdrawn from the Hairini Hack Handicap. TAURANGA COUNTRY IMPROVEMENT NEEDED The lay-out of the steeplechase course at Tauranga on Saturday was not all that might have been desired. The fences were flimsy and narrow with the wing scarcely adequate, and the turn off the course proper leading to the fences in the middle was too sharp. Until such times as it is able to erect permanent fences in the inside the club might be well advised to have brush steeplechases on the course proper. Movable brush fences suitable for such could be made without a great deal of cost and they could be moved in the same fashion as hurdles. The steeplechase course as at present constituted is not very attractive. SALE OF TANGAROA The pacing gelding Tangaroa, who showcii winning form early in the season, has been purchased by Mr. H. Salter, owner of Bayard Tangaroa is to be sent south at the earliest opportunity to join Bayard, who is now beinc trained by C. Dunlcvey at Addington.
