RIFLE DESTROYED
OBJECTION TO IMPRESSMENT (0.C.) CIIRISTCIfURCH, Sunday
A man who destroyed his JiO.'S calibre rifle before he received an impressment notice from the Government, Keir Hardie Samnis, appeared in the Christchurch Police Court before .Mr. 10. C. fiovvey, S.M.. charged with failing to give notice of the destruction of the rifle to the authorised arms oflicer. Samnis pleaded guilty and was lined 20s and costs, Sub-Inspector K. T. C. Turner, who prosecuted, said that Samnis was sent an impressment notice for the rifle from the National Service Department.. Samnis wrote hack saying that he had destroyed the rifle. "Inquires were made and Samms made a .statement to the police in which lie said that, because of his holding conscientious views, he had anticipated the impressment notice and destroyed the rifle, throwing it in pieces into the Heathcotc River," said .Mr. Turner. Samnis said that ho had not been aware that ho had to notify the destruction of the rifle, lie did so immediately tho impressment notice was sent.
