USE OF COCONUTS
MANUFACTURING CHARCOAL SUGAR COMPANY'S PURCHASE Since most oversea markets for copra disappeared and others became practically inaccessible, efforts linvo been in ado in island producing centres to find alternative uses of coconuts. In Fiji the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Limited, offered some prospect of relief by purchasing coconut shells for making charcoal. It was found that shipping the shell was uneconomical, and now some charcoal is being made on the plantations and shipped in that form. Now Zealand is conducting experiments in the use of copra as pig and cattle teed, and has bought a substantial quantity of copra_ Irom Western Samoa (Jiving an outline of these innovations. Sir Ma.vnard Hedstrom, president ot the Suva Chamber of Commerce. in his annual report, said that it was not known whether New Zealand was likely to make further purchases, but a« she had interests in Samoa and other Pacific groups, any development of this trade was unlikely to benefit Fiji.
