LONG TERM OF SERVICE (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday
News has been received of the promotion to the rank of wing commander of the Royal Air Force of Robert Calvert Richmond, son of Mrg. Parkinson, Saves Court, and the Jnte Mr. R. B. Richmond, formerly a civil engineer in Wellington. Wing - Commander Richmond, a nephew of the late Mr. Justice Richmond. was born in Wellington, and educated at Westminster, England. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1932, and attended the training college at Cranwell in 1934, afterwards being stationed at various operational units, including Irak. Ho left England for the Middle East in 1940. A brother is Commander Maxwell Richmond, 0.8. E., of H.M.S. Basilisk. MARTON SERGEANT'S SUCCESS TOP GRADUATE IX CLASS (0.C.) VAXGAXUI, Wednesday Information that Sergeant-Observer Basil Openshaw. eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Openshaw, Marton, was the top ranking graduate of a class of New Zealand airmen who completed their training last March at a school in Canada is contained in the St. Thomas Times-Journal, a newspaper published in St. Thomas, Ontario. Sergeant-Observer Openshaw, the journal states, was about to leave for the final brush-up course, before going overseas, at another training school in Canada. "His home was in Marton. a suburb of Wanganui." the paper adds. Before joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force last year. Sergeant-Observer Openshaw. who is 33 years of age. was a wireless operator for seven years on the sca-going staff of the Union Steam Ship Company.
