OBITUARY
| MRS. ANNIE TREWEEK | The doatli has occurred of Mrs. Annie | Treweek, of ;s Turama Road, Royal | Oak. in her 80fli year. A daughter of j the late Mr. and Mrs. R. Cornwall, she ' | was born at I'icton and went to Taranaki. At [Jrenui Mr. Cornwall built and owned the first hotel, and operated the first lorry over the Urenui River. The late Mrs. Treweek remembered the troublous times with the Maoris. She recollected the day when hostile natives visited the hotel shortly before the \\ liitc dills massacre, and the warning given bv friendlv Maoris to the white household that they would be murdered if they did not make their escape. All the women and children escaped to the redoubt and later were transferred by bullock dray to Waverley. Mr. Treweek joined the staff of the New Zealand railways at llawera, and upon his rotiremcnt settled at Royal Oak. where they have lived for the past 17 years Mrs. Treweek is survived by her husband, three sons and five daughters, and there are 2<l grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
